Son of Allen Williams and Camilla Lane, of Ipsden, Oxfordshire. He served aboard HMS Springbank together with his brother Richard Grenville. Both survived the sinking, but John later lost his life when HMS Avenger was sunk in November 1942.
Together with their elder brother Allen the brothers had founded Penguin Books in 1935. Allen and Richard continued to work as publishers after the war until the early 1960's.
