Cornelis Boot survived the sinking of Wangi Wangi in May 1941. Later in the war he became a Japanese prisoner of war and survived the sinking of the Japanese Army cargo ship Junyo Maru by the British submarine HMS Tradewind on 18 Sep, 1944. He also survived the Pekan Baru railroad labor camps. After the end of the war he continued to work in the Merchant Navy until retiring after 40 years and died peacefully at the age of 86.
