Personal information

Michael P. DeCarlo served in the US Merchant Marine from 18 May 1943 until 9 February 1945. He initially entered with a “Messman” rating due to his training as a cook in the CCC, but later changed to “Ordinary Seaman”. He made five round trips across the Atlantic, landing in North Africa, England, Belgium, and the invasion of Sicily. He received an Honorable Discharge from the Army and one from the Coast Guard, due to the status of the ships on which he sailed. He was discharged after his last ship, the Roanoke, was torpedoed and sunk by a U-boat on 11 January 1945.
