About 13.00 hours on 17 June 1942 the unescorted Moira (Master William Thorsen) was hit by one torpedo from U-158 off Corpus Christi and was then sunk by gunfire after the crew had abandoned ship. One crew member was lost and three were injured. The survivors in two lifeboats were found by a fishing boat the next day and towed to Port Isabel, Texas.
