At 05.35 hours on 21 January 1940 HMS Exmouth (H 02) (Capt R.S. Benson, DSO, RN) was hit on the starboard side in the bow by a G7e torpedo from U-22 and sank with all hands within three minutes about 21 miles southeast of Noss Head in the Moray Firth. The destroyer was escorting the British motor merchant Cyprian Prince which was missed with one G7a torpedo at 05.38 hours.
