At 12.42 hours on 21 August 1943 the Panikos was sunk by U-596 with 25 rounds from the deck gun about 40 miles west-southwest of Beirut. The crew left the sailing vessel in a lifeboat before it was attacked and made landfall at Tyre, Lebanon.
