At 17.47 hours on 7 Sep 1939 the unescorted Gartavon (Master George Smith Hunter) was sunk by gunfire by U-47 260 miles west-northwest of Cape Finisterre. All hands were picked up by the Castor and landed at Horta, Azores on 11 September.
