History | Laid down as Esso Trenton (hull 7) and launched as such. She operated, by the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey from the gulf coast to the east coast. Aquired by the US Navy on 22 October 1940 she was designated a fleet oiler (AO 28) and commissioned as such a day later. Converted to carrier at Newport News she was commissioned on 25 August 1942. Bombed on 19 October 1944, damaged further by a Kamikaze on 25 October 1944 at Leyte, Again damaged by a Kamikaze on 4 May 1945. In repair and overhaul for the remainder of the war. Repairs were incomplete at the end of the war. Decommissioned and stricken for disposal 24 October 1945. Sold 11 February 1948 and scrapped. |
