History | Laid down as tanker Markay (hull 5) she was aquired by the US Navy on 26 June 1941 after having operated as tanker for the Keystone Tankship Corporation. She was commissioned as AO 27 on 9 July 1941. Decommissioned on 21 February 1942 and the ship was then converted to an escort carrier at Newport News being commissioned on 24 September 1942. Bombed 25 and 26 October 1944 and damaged by an internal explosion on 24 May 1945. Decommissioned 28 October 1946. Stricken on 1 March 1959. Sold on 30 November 1959 and scrapped at Bilbao, Spain in June 1962. |
