USS R-1 (Lt.Cdr. J.H. Cunningham, Jr., USNR) departed Casco Bay, Maine for New London, Connecticut. She was escorted by USS Racine (Lt.Cdr. C.H. Waring, Jr., USCGR) to the east entrance to the Cape Cod Canal.
