HMT Kingston Cairngorm was mined in the English Channel off Portland on 17 October 1940. She sank while under tow the next day at 0318 hours.
The Kingston Cairngorm was still not back in service following the damage she had sustained in January 1940 and was at moment being towed by the tug Caroline Moller.
