Four British Graves and Submarine Warfare on the North Carolina Outer Banks

By Naisawald, L. VanLoan
1997, North Carolina Division of Archives and History
ISBN 0910244650
Paperback, 95 pages, multiple pictures and maps

Descripton: From back cover: A graphic and sad story of the British antisubmarine trawler Bedforshire and the German submarine U-558. Off Cape Lookout on a fateful night in 1942, the submarine torpedoed the Bedforshire and killed her entire crew. Four of the courageous British crewmen remain buried today in an Ocracoke Island cemetery visited each tourist season by hundreds of Americans and other travelers. Over the years, the cemetery has been a special place of remembrance for coastal North Carolinians, many of whom could recall personally the dangers that lurked along the Outer Banks during World War II. The cemetery holding the graves of the four British crewmen is the only plot of BRITISH land in the continental United States.
